Histoy Of The Ragdoll

The Ragdoll is effectively a man-made breed, created in the early 1960s by Anne Baker, a cat breeder in California. Anne used an Angora type cat, a seal mitted (white gloves and boots over a Siamese type colour) male and a solid black cat to produce her foundation Ragdolls.

It wasn’t until 1981 that Ragdolls were imported to the UK by two separate breeders. The goal in creating the Ragdoll was to produce a glamourous cat with a very laid back, relaxed nature, ideal as a family companion. It is safe to say that goal was achieved, the Ragdoll is renowned for their super chilled attitude to life!

Ragdoll Personality

The Ragdoll is known for its calm, affectionate, and easygoing nature, making it a wonderful companion. Their striking looks and gentle personality often make it hard for owners to stop at just one. Curious by nature, Ragdolls enjoy being part of daily life, preferring to sit nearby—on a book, paperwork, or in a sunny garden spot—rather than engage in anything too active.

Despite myths about their “floppy” behavior, Ragdolls are not overly limp or insensitive to pain. They simply relax when handled because of their trusting temperament.

Color & Design of the Ragdoll Cat

Colourpoint

The Ragdoll has a cream-colored body with darker extremities (mask, ears, legs, and tail). The chest is usually lighter than the rest of the body. The body color is darker in seal point than in chocolate point, and darker in blue point than in lilac point. Colorpoint cats must not have any white markings.

Middle

Light-colored body and white chest, ruff, chin, and white “gloves” on the front paws. The hind legs are white up to the joint. The white area on the hind legs should extend at least to the hock and no higher than half the lower leg.

The balls of the feet are completely pink and the mask may have a facial blaze (a white stripe on the bridge of the nose).

Bicolour

The bicolour ragdoll has a white chin, white chest, white undersides and white paws. A key feature is the white mask in the shape of an inverted “V”. Ideally, the mask begins in the middle of the forehead and extends over the eyes to the back of the chin.

White markings on the back are permitted in the Bicolour Ragdoll. The body is also cream-colored, as with the other varieties. Read more  →
